Wall Talk: Moving Image Tour

What happens when you give an art-toting, hat-wearing, projector-bike-riding, video-shooting, super-guide a generator and a loudspeaker? Well if it wasn’t during SALA (the South Australian Living Artists festival), he’d likely be arrested or even put in a padded room. Thankfully though, it is SALA and instead, those who braved the frigid conditions on Tuesday night were taken on a tour of the city which transformed the average street wall, graffiti and all, into a canvas that would rival Joseph’s coat.

Contemporary art is always a bit hit-and-miss with audiences and moving image is no different. There were some pieces which had very little impact beyond hurting your ears and eyes but then there were others which you could really connect with, Lauren Sutter’s work and Tangerine Meg (pictured above) were particularly awesome.

It seemed to be that Adelaide got bigger as we traipsed down the various back-alleys and watched the projected images on century-old walls. In this context it really did seem to make sense that we were tagging along after a mad hatter and his rat/dog/ferret-clad assistant. So much so, that we picked up some regular passers by and a couple of taxis whom pulled over to the side of the road to fill in the boring time they spend waiting for a fare.

Thanks to Luku  and our extravagently named tour guides for organising it all and we look forward to next year!
And Thanks to Maebe Tetlow-Stuart for the photos!
