CD - Ice Cube: RAW FOOTAGE

It’s been a long time coming
for Ice Cube. After hanging out in Tinseltown for a good number of years it’s good to have the Cube back on beat street. It’s not great but definitely good.

Raw Footage follows on in the vein of modern gangsta rap like Chronic 2001 but lacks the flair and diversity of Dre’s production. There’s too many of those slow crump-club-classics you can just imagine the sweaty boys and girls getting to over at Red Square. The bottom half of the album evens the score somewhat. Keith David’s voice-overs are over acted but add interest, plus the stand out track ‘Stand Tall’ with William DeVaughan’s sample provides the perfect antidote and a definite add to any soul-inspired playlist.

There’s some head nodding to
be had throughout the album and even a trace of our favourite flannelette-wearing homeboy from Friday (1995). A couple of decent tracks and bobbing heads won’t win you accolades, however, it might just get you paid, and that’s really what rap’s all about.
