Burning Art

Although the Olympic torch's Aussie moment came and went, the controversy surrounding this year's torch relay is far from snuffed out. Alongside the throngs of pro-Tibet and pro-China protestors, street art has played an important role in activism - and raising awareness of just what everyone's yammering on about.

Yesterday pro-Tibet protestors unfurled a massive banner over King's Cross in Sydney - a knock-off of Coca-Cola's distinctive 'ribbon' logo, with the text "Compassion: Always Tibet". Not to be outdone, today Green's leader Bob Brown hired a sky-writer to write "Free Tibet" over this morning's torch relay. (Also not to be outdone: the pro-China activists who later commissioned a plane dragging the message "Go Go Beijing Olympics".)

Walls from Bangkok to Milan bear reminders of the torch relay that Beijing would probably rather forget. But while the flame itself has only about a week until it is safely back home in China, chances are the debate won’t peter out that easily.
