Merge tells you what we've been up to this week in Adelaide.

Friday 21st November

Well I said we don’t like blowing our own horns, but here we are again, blowing our own horns (not like that). Got this cheeky parcel in the mail today – a giveaway for next ish! What could it be? You’ll just have to snap up the new ish of Merge next Thursday to see! See? …classic magazine talk, that. Anyway, have a good weekend, see you Monday!

Thursday 20th November

Headed down to Gallery 139 on Magill Rd tonight to check out the new show. I’m really happy that I made the trek, because I got to come face to face with Shane Devries’ incredibly cool work. He has this knack of making what should be disposable pop art into epic ‘fine’ art – I’ve never before seen bug eyed critters with big grins so skilfully created. Plus, it was his first show! I was really blown away and would have thought about snapping up a painting if they hadn’t already been snapped up by the many cashed-up patrons. 139 is just what Adelaide needs: a gallery that displays highly talented young artists, with a clientele of people who actually buy art attending. Get in if you can!

Wednesday 19th November

Not to blow our own horn or anything (I’ve heard that’s physically impossible, anyway), but these sweet prizes and more await you if youenter our Planet B-Boy competition. All you have to do is put a comment on the Planet B-Boy review, and we give free tickets to the premiere of the movie to whoever says the most interesting thing! Also up for grabs is this B-Boy Records CD, which is perfec for getting your helicopter on to. I saw the movie the other day and it’s absolutely great, so there’s no reason for you not to enter unless you are Helen Keller in which case you shouldn’t be on the computer because you died 30 years ago. Back!

Tuesday 18th November

This is Farrin, she’d definitely hate me putting this picture here but she illustrates the best thing about doing this magazine: the fact that we get to meet and work with so many different people. Everyone that contributes to Merge by-in-large are moonlighting as something else to pay the bills and see that they’ve always got enough cash in the bank to have fun and support their passion. Drop in to Tempo on Hindley Street for a coffee and have a chat with Farrin, apart from totally freaking her out that you know her name she’s actually quite an interesting person – like all the Merge contributors. Are you an interesting person? If you even think you are just a little bit we’d love to hear from you and hear what you’re passionate about.

Monday 17th November

There are things that irk me and there are things that make me laugh. The situation on Saturday morning at breakfast in the Central Markets is a weird sort of mix between these two feelings. Sitting in the communal (free-for-all) seating between Zuma’s and Lucia’s we watched people come and go, the free face painting lady with a line 10 meters long and all sorts of wonderful Saturday morning-type people. Then I spotted this sign and had a good chuckle as various grey-hairs stopped by to get up-to-date. After watching that process for a while I noticed the cop that came with the sign, wearing his utility belt with hand-cannon and all. Why does an info-booth-cop need a gun? Probably to shoot any young punk that tried to steal the ID chart for their bedroom wall.
